In order to revive cashew production in Nigeria, a memorandum of understanding has been signed between the federal government and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) under the West-Africa PRO-Cashew project, Vanguard said. The project will be implemented by Cultivating New Frontiers in Agriculture (CNFA) for a period of five years.

According to the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mohammed Nanono, “This initiative would help the ministry achieve the target of increased production capacity from 260,000 tonnes in 2020 to 350,000 tonnes in 2023, and the processing capacity of 15% in 2020 to 35% by 2023 ”. He said the average yield was 600 kilos per hectare against a world average of 1,230 kg / ha.

In addition, the Minister formed a working committee to examine the issues and challenges of the cashew value chain and contribute to the development of a ten-year strategic plan. Members of the committee include Nigeria Agribusiness Registrar CEO Roland Oroh and Federal Department of Agriculture (FDA) director Karima Babangida.
